Millions of Americans are living with addiction every day. A U.S. surgeon général report in 2016 estimated that close to 21 million Americans suffer from substance abuse disorders. Only 10% of these people receive treatment for substance abuse.
What is the reason? Costs are a major reason. The cost of treatment was a major factor in the fact that almost 40% of Americans with substance use disorders didn't get to rehab between 2011-2014. They either couldn't afford it, or they didn’t have insurance.
The cost to treat addiction is significantly lower than that of treatment. People don't realize the fact that insurance can dramatically reduce rehab costs. The new law requires insurance companies to cover mental health and addiction treatment.
